I am going to tell you about a disagreement I had with my roommate Xiaoming. It was about a year ago, when my city suddenly announced that to mitigate air pollution, from December 1st, 2021, it would restrict the use of private vehicles based on even-and odd-numbered license plates.

Once this piece of information was released, it sparked a lot of controversies. Xiaoming was an ardent supporter, who argued that since private vehicles contributed most of the pollutants in the atmosphere, this policy should be able to improve the air quality significantly and thus lower the risk of getting respiratory diseases, which were becoming increasingly prevalent among children and senior citizens. So we should support it.

I, on the other hand, focused on the negative sides of this policy. Firstly, the government did not implement supporting measures, like increasing the shifts of public transport, which inevitably caused long queues at bus stops and subway stations. This article is from website. Secondly, it only scratched the surface of the problem and did not eradicate the root. As long as we consumed fossil fuels, the issue of air pollution would continue to perplex us.

The argument was solved in a funny way. Just when we were expressing our opinions eagerly, another roommate of mine said it sounded as if both of you had owned cars and would be affected by this policy, which immediately shut us up. But I actually thought this argument was pretty intriguing. It inspired you to think about the conflict between personal and public interests, and short-term and long-term goals.
